Show # 2 'Plastic Passion'

*(Nearly) All vinyl show

All right, so this particular 'plastic passion' is not of Archie's Dilton persuasion.

It's of the 'vinyl record' variety, although not completely.

Much to my chagrin, when I arrived at the K-dub studio the second turntable apparently had a damaged needle. Which put a considerable kink in my plans for an 'all vinyl' show.

So in all honesty about half of the show is vinyl, although I did try to keep an old, crispy theme throughout.

You will probably be able to guess which is vinyl and which is not.
At least it's all fantastic music and that's what really matters, right?

Show # 1 'We Are Our Memories'

*Mix Show # 1
For M...

Ahh, the very first new show of the year!
New beginnings.
New day.
New time.
And hopefully...
New listeners?
Hmm, well who is to say...
Of what I am certain I have had at least one avid listener throughout my shows.
My cousin Maija.
I decided a long while ago this first show would have to be for her, especially since she will be away from home for a whole month.
This is the first mix show of the year, although the mix is condensed a bit to make room for some new songs.
If you listen, you will notice that I failed to make any mention of the last two songs.
The simple explanation...
I have a cold.
You know...
"starve a cold, feed a fever".
Well, I haven't been eating much, but drinking MANY liquids!
So as you can imagine, by the last 15 minutes (or longer if I am completely honest) my mind was... elsewhere engaged (suddenly, I can't help but think of those little 'Enablex' balloons dancing around and here I am with no restroom near enough to the studio).
Anyway, once you find yourself in that particular predicament... well,
you can guess how eager I was to finish up the show and go... literally.

Show # 13 'The Last Broadcast'

*Last show of 2008

Here is the last of the 2008 Fall quarter shows.

It was a playlist I had been planning for months, not realizing how snowy it would be when the time finally came for the final broadcast of the year.

I think that it was a pretty good run of shows and I feel like I have improved quite a bit in my skills as a DJ. Hopefully, I will improve even more this next time around as I have already put in an application for Spring quarter.

So please do not forget to check in to see how things go.
Will be keeping you posted!

Show # 12 'All Of This Happened Before The 21st'

*Mix Show #5
For Amy...

Back in the day (around 5 years ago), it would seem that I had a little too much time to kill and was absolutely 'Mix-mad'!
My best friend Amy was moving away to the Portland, Oregon area back in early '04, so as part of a going away present I made her a couple mixes (naturally).
One was all music from the 21st century while the other was all music 'before' that.
Odd idea, maybe.
But as I said, I did have a lot of time on my hands.
Anyhow, this show is for Amy, who currently is working as a missionary in British Guyana.

Show #11 'I Helped Wipe Out The Sixties'

ALL 70s show!

Sadly, Stooges Guitarist Ron Asheton was found dead one week ago today.
Apparently, it was a heart attack.
He was 60 years old.

To me, it just seems to have symbolized yet another generation creeping up on us.

I doubt that Ron Asheton felt 60 years old.

Last Thursday, David Bowie turned 62! I doubt he feels 62. He certainly does not look it.

On the 21st of April this year, Iggy Pop turns 62 and Robert Smith is finally 50 years old!
And once again, I truly doubt they feel it! (Here is an article from '89 with Robert Smith talking about turning 30)

Maybe, I sound a bit pathetic here, because I am neither 60, 50 nor even 40. But I suppose age has been on the mind as of lately since at the end of this next year I hit ...
The Big 3-0.

I do not feel 30 nor do I believe that I will when I actually do turn 30.
I still feel uncertain about this.
I may actually lose it when the day comes.
Maybe I will simply forget what day it is as I usually do.

Heaven knows really.
What I do know is that we all get older,
but the music is timeless.

Show #10 'Abstract With Memories' *re-recorded

"Memory... is the diary that we all carry about with us", so says Oscar Wilde.
Unfortunately, mine seemed to escape me during this particular show.

What am I talking about?

Well, several times I failed to mention certain songs that I had played.
I also wasn't as informative as I normally aim to be about the playlist.

However I did have some pretty good excuses...
Extreme hunger.
Frustration. Due to disorganization.

I could go on, but I choose to spare you.

I was so dismayed by all of this that I felt compelled to re-record the show (the original posted was recorded via live feed from kwcw.net) and polish it up a bit.

Visit the original post for the playlist and updated download link.

Enjoy!

"We are able to find everything in our memory, which is like a dispensary or chemical laboratory in which chance steers our hand sometimes to a soothing drug and sometimes to a dangerous poison."

Pandemonium!

After today's Zune 30 fiasco, I have decided that it is actually comparable to the Ex.

In the beginning, I was so happy and excited to have finally got something this wonderful.

Later on, I felt rather concerned when it started giving me grief.

One day, it had just stopped working.

I chose to ignore bad things some people would say about it like "It's for the best." and "You can do better.", because I thought it was just so unique, so nice-looking and had brought me a lot of joy.

Although, it failed me, I couldn't help but feel there was hope for it, afterall, we had some good times!

Now, after tomorrow, we shall see if my Zune 30 comes back to me and apologizes by playing like the good little mp3 player she is.

As for the other...
I am not holding my breath.

Re-issue ! Re-package ! Re-package ! ...

... Re-evaluate the songs ...

... That is what I have started doing lately.

After changing the way I do my shows this past Fall, I decided to go back and re-edit my Summer shows.

You shall see what I mean with this one I have already done.
I polished it up a bit by overlapping the songs, cutting the show size down by just a couple minutes. Sure, it is tedious work, but well worth the effort I think.

Having a show scheduled right after mine this past Fall (unlike the Summer) has forced me to re-evaluate my 'cue-ing style'. In a way, I am sort of glad for it. I managed to fit a couple more minutes into the shows and it sounds a bit more like I know what I am doing. ;^)

For now, I will give you a re-edited Show # 7 'Electronic Renaissance Pt. 2', from the Summer. Just for a bit of a taste of the small changes I made.

For all I know you may not even notice the difference, but I DO think it flows a lot nicer myself.

Let me know what you think!

Shows #6 & 7 'Fear Of Ghosts Pts. 1 & 2'

Mix Show #3

Here is a special treat for you all,
2 shows in a row, 6 and 7!

I was especially excited about recording and posting these particular shows, however, unfortunately was quite dismayed by the sound quality of show 6.

So I am apologizing in advance for that.

I suppose I should not be surprised by this happening every once in a while, judging from the means in which I record my shows (via the radio at home). It is a slightly long and boring process that I do not wish to share at present.

All I can say is that I definitely must rectify this before my next season, should that happen.

The second installment, show 7, is just fine though.
I believe I can safely say that I make up for the poor sound quality with part two, not to mention all of the bits of 'The Picture Of Dorian Gray', quite possibly my favourite film now!

"Difference of object does not alter singleness of passion. It merely intensifies it. We can have in life but one great experience at best, and the secret of life is to reproduce that experience as often as possible."

Show # 4 'Subtle Imperfections Becoming Inconspicuous'

Mix Show # 2

Unfortunately, this is not the original artwork for the cover of this mix.

Normally, with a bit of web-delving, I can usually manage to find the artwork.
Not this time though! And I can not even begin to recall where I found the photo 3 years earlier.
So, I gave you a different work by Bruce Nauman, 'Lip Sync' (1969) which seems to suffice quite fine.
But I'm still upset that I don't have access to the original cover art.
Darn broken down old PC and estranged old friend for whom I made the mix!

Show # 3 'Manchester... Nothing To Answer For'

Mr. Steven Patrick Morrissey said it well when he revised his statement "Manchester, so much to answer for."

In my humble opinion, if it was made in Manchester...
It is awesome.

It all started, for myself, with New Order and Joy Division.
Respectively, The Smiths and Morrissey soon followed.
Then, an 'UNCUT' magazine featuring New Order on the cover and Bernard Sumner seemingly holding the CD which came with the issue (or perhaps it's Hooky holding it, I'm still not certain). There was a very long New Order article (multiple pages long) and an awesome spread about essential Manchester records. I still have that magazine around somewhere.

It is kind of funny how a certain part of the United Kingdom has produced such greatness.
And I suppose, we have Mr. Anthony Wilson to thank for bringing much-deserved exposure to a few of these ones.

Thanks, Tony.

"My theory on Manchester and why it produces the bands it does is that because the world is willing to listen to them, it gives the kids a confidence and and a belief that what has happened before might happen again. It's something to aim for."
- Jimi Goodwin (May '00)

'12:13 Dream' The Cure MySpace Secret Show...

Oh dear, oh dear! Those boys are sneaky indeed!

So I'm checking my myspace page, and notice that The Cure have a new bulletin.
And this is what I see.

How MUCH I regret not being anywhere near Hollywood right now!

Unless I am mistaken, this does NOT happen often.

We are talking about a venue that only fits around 500 people!
This is a chance to be just feet away from Robert Smith!
AMAZING!

I keep thinking of The Cure 'Play Out', and how much I want to be there in that small, cramped audience, every time I watch it!
And now, people will have that opportunity Saturday, on the 13th of December.

These ones that get into the Troubadour are in for one unforgettable show!
How I envy them.
