Show # 9 'The Vinyl Solution'

All vinyl show!

I love vinyl.
And there's really not much more I can say than that...
well... maybe a little more.

I have spoke briefly of this love affair earlier.
This you will know from my second show post.
There is something very special about records.
You place that intricately grooved slice of vinyl on the turntable... subtle shivers begin instantly!
Heaven knows if this is the millioneth time that needle has hit that first groove.
I believe that is part of the true art of it all.
Oh go on and call it nostalgia if you like, that is quite all right with me.
I have always had a bit of a weakness for nostalgia, anyway.

As I said way back at the beginning...Show # 1 from this past Summer, just might be re-recorded.
And so, amazingly, it has actually happened!

Since I currently have the means, this past afternoon, I decided a redux was finally in order. Especially, since it will not be too long until I am posting my Fall shows.
There's a slight change in the playlist.
A bit of editing and a request from my sister to my beautiful cousin Maija.
This one is for her... Dear M.

Show # 8 'Moths Around The Flame'

Mix Show # 4

The 'mix' can prove to be somewhat divinatory.

Although, it was made for somebody else, listening to the songs some years later,
you suddenly realize...

I made this for the future me.

Of course, perhaps intuitively, this is what I have been doing all along.

Selfish me!

Show # 7 'Electronic Renaissance Part 2'

All right. I said that the Electronic Renaissance would prevail. And so it does. And still...
the renaissance does not feel complete... of course, it is not, how could it be?

I did manage to get Kraftwerk and New Order here and I apologize for the travesty of neglecting them on part one.

Delia Derbyshire is quite an important part of the equation, as well. The sound was there in her head (as it was) and she found the best way she could to release it, on to electronic oscillators and magnetic tapes at that (quite the tedious task).

The real revelation here though was Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. They seemed to just float right out of my subconscious as the signature electronic band for myself. I really can not explain it. All I can say is, I love everything about what they did, especially back in the day. They were the complete package.

And ever still... there is so much more story to be (and yet to be) told that I can not be absolutely satisfied. But for now, this should suffice.

And I think Vince Noir would approve as well. ;^)

Show # 5 'Electronic Renaissance part 1'

When you do an all 'electronic music' show, it's amazing how much you've realized you've left out. Hence, Electronic Renaissance part one.

I knew initially this was a given. It's impossible to fit every relevant electronic band in just one show. For example, no Kraftwerk or New Order in this show, two of the most important electronic bands ever.

My cousin Maija and sister Kalurah joined me for this show, which was very nice because the last time this happened was back in 1999, on my friend Amy and I's show on KWCW 'The Easy Cure' (which I plan to blog about at a later date).

The electronic band I apparently hold closest to my heart is revealed later in show # 7 'Electronic Renaissance pt. 2'. Stay tuned...

Note: I apologize for the poor sound quality on this one. All of my shows are recorded from the radio and the reception was not so good on this particular day. Especially on the Pet Shop Boys 'It Must Be Obvious'. For a better quality version click here.

Show # 3 'Can You Feel Me Dancing'

*Mix show # 1*

Dance Music.
We all have different ideas about what it is.
And you know what?
They are all correct.

What is 'danceable' (hmm, am I inventing words again?) to me, may leave others with furrowed brows (wha-huh?) and vice versa.

My friend Amy knows all too well about this as well.
The Cure... The Smiths... Depeche Mode... VHS Or Beta...
It is only when we hear music like this that we'll say...
"I am ready for the floor."

Amy made me a couple of mixes back in the Spring of this year.
One in particular was entitled 'Can You Feel Me Dancing?'
The title was taken from movie of the same name.
Amy and I would frequently spot it whilst at the video store and giggle and mock the rather silly-sounding title, never actually renting it.

But it made an interesting and poignant title for a mix -a sampling all of our dance music.

This show is not strictly about dancing though. But I won't go on any further about it, since in the show both Amy and I give plenty of commentary.
So you simply will just have to listen for yourself.

Tune in tomorrow...

So, the lovely people at KWCW has accepted my plea for a slot in their Fall programming!
I'm really excited because it didn't happen last Fall.

I will just have to keep up the mindset that there's no way I can run out of ideas for shows.
There really is no way actually.
Seriously.

To elaborate, I've even had the idea of doing a show centered around songs where the singer breaks into laughter (and yeah, there are quite a few songs).

As you can imagine, the possibilites are quite limitless.

So, if you have means, please do have a listen.
Elvis will be listening, well not really, but he would if he knew about it.
Every Tuesday afternoon
1 to 3 pm

Note:
Since I'll be doing new shows, I'm going to post the past Summer shows more rapidly. So stay in touch with the blog, you never know how soon I'll post a 'new' old one.

Show # 2 'The Radio's On Ice'

I tend to gravitate toward ‘older’ music. Well, old by today’s ultra modern standards. Don’t get me wrong. I really do like many bands today, but to be honest, quite a lot of it I’ve simply heard before, if you get my meaning.

Typical scenario: I’ll be listening to something ‘new’ and it’s quite good but then I start thinking “Hmm, that bit there reminds me of Gang of Four.” Sadly, it’s become almost inevitable. Thus, I’m always pulled back to the 70’s and 80’s.

Although nostalgia can be fun, it’s when a new band doesn’t remind me of anything, that I know they are the real deal. Mind you, this is an extremely difficult task without sounding like absolute avant-garde madness. But that’s another show.

‘Old’ music (ugh, I’ve realized how much I loathe that word), is not for everyone though. And some people (a heck of a lot) just don’t seem to appreciate or have the patience for the crackle and pop bliss that is vinyl. I most ardently am quite keen on it, in fact, there’s nothing quite like it.

Every song on this show came from the ‘vinyl era’ something I hadn’t realized at the time. So, my point is only proved further… I’m drawn to this and I suppose that it will always be my ‘familiar’. You’ll see further evidence of this in later shows.

Show # 1 'Step Into My Mainstream'

Typically, it's always difficult to think of a first show.

Until of course, you're socked straight in the face with the idea which is usually so much simpler than you thought... ''the 'playlist' on your myspace page, silly!"

Ah, yes, the 'social music experiment' which many of us audiophiles have discovered. Just another attempt at showcasing your self-proclaimed 'eclectic' musical taste and your mad DJ skills (or is it just in my head?).

'Step Into My Mainstream' was the name of this particular playlist (and yes, I've adopted the belief that 'playlist' is one word, despite spellcheck's nay-saying and I made spellcheck one word as well, take that!). The idea of this playlist is simply an example of what is part of my 'mainstream' or music I listen to everyday regularly.

So, this should be lovely, what a nice idea for a first show. This will give a general spectrum to your listening audience as of what to expect from you... yes, lovely.

Everything then shall fall into place without any effort, except...

Your playlist is about 30 minutes longer than it should be.
Thus... the dreaded word, 'edit'. Ahh! This is very difficult for someone like me.

The Girl Least Likely To...
take some songs off the playlist so as not to have a near 3 hour show! I mean, they're all really good songs and absolutely necessary to the theme 'Step Into My Mainstream', yes, each and every one!

However, in the end, I convinced myself to detach from certain songs and did edit it down to what you see below.

Note: This first show, unfortunately, was not recorded as the others were. Although, a re-recording has come to mind and may actually happen... we shall see. Meanwhile, you can check out the 'original unedited' version (music only) at my myspace page.

!!!Update!!!: Show was re-recorded in October.
