Show #11 'It's Going To Be A Fine Night, Tonight'

There's no real special theme for this show.

I got sort of fed up with always having a 'theme' at this particular moment and just wanted to play what I felt like.

Although it all has a kind of Spring-y tinge to it, well as far as I'm concerned.

Also, it would seem that I started to get my 'shoe-gaze' on for a moment.

But mostly this is music that reminds me of green, breezy days and cool nights.

Spring is the most 'hopeful' of months... so here are some songs that seem to have a dab of hope in them.

"I should have been more careful, waxing hope in cruelest April... I thought that we were there."

House Burning... Firemen Sleeping

Mix Show #4

Cover art: Paul Klee, 'Fire In The Evening' (1929)

Now didn't I say I'd be more on the ball this week?
And so, the very next day no less, I give you show #10!
Now if I can just keep it this way, oh, I'm sure I will.

I failed to mention in the show what actually inspired this mix.

One day years ago, whilst driving out in the countryside through a small outskirt community something caught my attention.

A house barely intact that had obviously burned down to the ground, and right next door was a Fire Station.

Now while I pondered this for a moment I thought, well evidently this was a very old house and was most likely used by the station for training or something. Nonetheless, I thought it’d make a humourous photograph. Unfortunately though it was impossible to get the two things to fit side by side in the photo.

So the idea of a concept mix came to me instead, and this, many months later, is what has resulted.

I ended up making it for a friend whom I thought might appreciate the title being the huge Morrissey fan that he is.

I really didn’t want to do this whole ‘fire’ theme throughout the mix as I thought that might be a bit too pretentious. Besides that really wasn’t the true gist of it anyhow.

So there are various subtleties in the songs, although after a while the title wasn’t as pertinent and what I thought the intended listener would really like was considered more instead. But I think it still turned out nice anyway

Show # 9 'The British Disease'

All U.K. Bands!

Wow, I suppose it would seem I am back from sort of a 'Spring Break'.

Fortunately, I have been mad busy as of late, although unfortunately it means I have neglected my blog, sorry.

Do you really actually care.... hmmm?

Well anyway enough of that nonsense.

I promise it will be different now as I am back to not having a life... sigh.

The lovely Maija joins me on this show for a last minute tribute to our beloved United Kingdom and the many bands therein whom we hold dear.

Our mission...
Visit this blessed land one day...
Or at least by the month of October of this year.
We shall see.

I am not going to talk about how unhenged I became on this particular show although I will mention that the end was cut off rather abruptly, so I apologize in advance.
note: you can actually WATCH a video of the end of this show here!

I knew that I should have come on and said my goodbyes BEFORE I played 'London Calling'. Oh well. I added in a few random British goodies to suffice.

"England is mine, and it owes me a living."

Show # 7 'Autosuggestion'

Mix Show # 3 (2005)

Autosuggestion...
is defined in the dictionary as an influencing of one's own attitudes, behavior, or physical condition by mental processes other than conscious thought :

SELF-HYPNOSIS.

Sometimes you will just feel a certain connection with some band or music and that is just it.
It becomes unconditional.

Perhaps as time and life circumstances change you, your love for it will pale or cool off considerably, but there are always fragments left and you never forget how it made you feel.

That's the important bit I think.
Music can build you,
make the person you are.
Add elements to you.
Change your thoughts, ideas and opinions or rather just mirror these and make them stronger.

While I find lyrics and music important what proves most poignant to me is the aura it gives off.

Bands like Interpol and The Walkmen have achieved this most successfully, which naturally is why I had included them in this mix I suppose...
I really had no choice.

I think that this just might very well be one of the fastest show posts since I started this blog.
We'll just see whether or not that becomes a trend.

"A point of view creates more waves,
So take a chance and step outside."

Show # 6 'Why Can't I Be You?'

All Cure cover songs!

(1996)
Guess who I wanted to be way back when...

Apparently, I wasn't alone in my endeavours with just a few of many Cure tribute albums as proof.

I selected a handful of my particular favourites from three that came out recently:
And finally NME's February 25th CD companion 'Pictures Of You: A Tribute To Godlike Geniuses The Cure' in light of The Cure's recent 'NME Godlike Genius Award'.

I won't say much more and simply let the music speak for itself...

Besides, Robert Smith gives a far superior introduction than I ever could.

Would you expect anything less from a genius?

"I'm smitten, I'm bitten, I'm hooked, I'm cooked, I'm stuck like glue..."

Show # 4 'Nordic Tracks'

All Scandinavian bands!

music video still: 'When I Found The Knife'

Manchester.

Liverpool.

Sheffield.

Sweden?

Yes, as much as I have a great love for many bands from various parts of the U.K., the Nordic regions are quite important to me as well.

I suppose it all must have started when I was a kid.
Sitting in the back seat of my parents Chevrolet Citation with my sister hearing Abba's 'Take A Chance On Me' blarring through the car speakers.

Then just a few years later, thinking that A-ha just might be my favourite band.

It really doesn't matter.
Because now we have the fabulous Knife and Mew, who seem to incapsulate every bit of what I appreciated as a child and pre-teen... and that's a pretty awesome thing to do.

And oh dear, I know that I've forgotten the brilliant José González in this show, so very sorry.
But don't worry, I'll try to make up for it at a later date.

Show # 3 'The Electronic Renaissance Edition'

film still: 'Electric Dreams' (1984)

If I consider all of the shows that I have done,
25 if I do not include Summer '07,
this would actually be the '3rd' Electronic Renaissance show.

The other two, I did in the Summer of '08.
Part 1 and Part 2.

I never seem to tire of electronic music and always seem to gravitate back toward it.

Depeche Mode, OMD and New Order will be the constant most important, for myself.

But there are new acts that are leaving a great impression as well.
The Presets, Hot Chip and most especially, The Knife, whom bring to mind my idea for an all Scandinavian show which may very likely happen in the near future!

Thank you to Amy and Eric who suggested The Presets.
At the end of the set,
a dedication from me.

"I just want your music tonight."

Show # 2 'Plastic Passion'

*(Nearly) All vinyl show

All right, so this particular 'plastic passion' is not of Archie's Dilton persuasion.

It's of the 'vinyl record' variety, although not completely.

Much to my chagrin, when I arrived at the K-dub studio the second turntable apparently had a damaged needle. Which put a considerable kink in my plans for an 'all vinyl' show.

So in all honesty about half of the show is vinyl, although I did try to keep an old, crispy theme throughout.

You will probably be able to guess which is vinyl and which is not.
At least it's all fantastic music and that's what really matters, right?

Show # 1 'We Are Our Memories'

*Mix Show # 1
For M...

Ahh, the very first new show of the year!
New beginnings.
New day.
New time.
And hopefully...
New listeners?
Hmm, well who is to say...
Of what I am certain I have had at least one avid listener throughout my shows.
My cousin Maija.
I decided a long while ago this first show would have to be for her, especially since she will be away from home for a whole month.
This is the first mix show of the year, although the mix is condensed a bit to make room for some new songs.
If you listen, you will notice that I failed to make any mention of the last two songs.
The simple explanation...
I have a cold.
You know...
"starve a cold, feed a fever".
Well, I haven't been eating much, but drinking MANY liquids!
So as you can imagine, by the last 15 minutes (or longer if I am completely honest) my mind was... elsewhere engaged (suddenly, I can't help but think of those little 'Enablex' balloons dancing around and here I am with no restroom near enough to the studio).
Anyway, once you find yourself in that particular predicament... well,
you can guess how eager I was to finish up the show and go... literally.
