I know it's over... still I cling

Well, Fall broadcasting is over for the year at KWCW.
But do not fret.
I plan on putting in an application for next year.
Not sure when programming should start up again then, but I will keep you posted.
For now, show #4 (mix show #2), is coming up very soon.
I will also be putting my tail in gear on getting the rest of these other shows recorded and posted.
As ever,
Stay Tuned.

Show # 3 'Manchester... Nothing To Answer For'

Mr. Steven Patrick Morrissey said it well when he revised his statement "Manchester, so much to answer for."
In my humble opinion, if it was made in Manchester...
It is awesome.
It all started, for myself, with New Order and Joy Division.
Respectively, The Smiths and Morrissey soon followed.
Then, an 'UNCUT' magazine featuring New Order on the cover and Bernard Sumner seemingly holding the CD which came with the issue (or perhaps it's Hooky holding it, I'm still not certain). There was a very long New Order article (multiple pages long) and an awesome spread about essential Manchester records. I still have that magazine around somewhere.
It is kind of funny how a certain part of the United Kingdom has produced such greatness.
And I suppose, we have Mr. Anthony Wilson to thank for bringing much-deserved exposure to a few of these ones.
Thanks, Tony.
"My theory on Manchester and why it produces the bands it does is that because the world is willing to listen to them, it gives the kids a confidence and and a belief that what has happened before might happen again. It's something to aim for."

'12:13 Dream' The Cure MySpace Secret Show...

Oh dear, oh dear! Those boys are sneaky indeed!
So I'm checking my myspace page, and notice that The Cure have a new bulletin.
And this is what I see.
How MUCH I regret not being anywhere near Hollywood right now!
Unless I am mistaken, this does NOT happen often.
We are talking about a venue that only fits around 500 people!
This is a chance to be just feet away from Robert Smith!
AMAZING!
I keep thinking of The Cure 'Play Out', and how much I want to be there in that small, cramped audience, every time I watch it!
And now, people will have that opportunity Saturday, on the 13th of December.
These ones that get into the Troubadour are in for one unforgettable show!
How I envy them.

Show #10 'Abstract With Memories' -SPECIAL ADVANCE download
Mix Show #4

All right, so there are a few firsts that I am about to unleash here.
First off, #10?
Yes, I know that I have jumped from show #1 to #10.
My cousin Maija expressed an enthusiasm to hear the show right away since she missed it.
And my friend Jason, who helps me out quite a lot with all of this, already had recorded the live feed from kwcw.net.
So I figured that I would jump the gun, as it were...
I had the mp3 of the show, I can edit it a bit and post a show early and out of order.
The sound quality via the internet feed is a bit too treble-ly for my preference, but it will work for now. NOTE: The show has been re-recorded! Updated link below.
Secondly, this is yet another show that I did as a sub this past Wednesday night (not my usual time slot). The show ran from around 7 pm to 10!
So it's quite a bit longer than the rest of the shows that I've been posting (you can do the math!). I was a bit flustered with this particular show. I'm not so used to being in the studio that long. Tired, hungry and having many difficulty having to reproduce the playlist (thanks crappy old pc). So please do forgive any ineptness displayed. The fabulous playlist should make up for it.
note: Halfway through the show, I allude to the fact that Jay Jay Johanson collaborated with somebody whom completely slipped my mind at the time. Sorry, it would seem that I was, at the time, suffering temporary memory loss due to EXTREME hunger. Of course the Swedish band I was thinking of was The Knife, and the song was 'Marble House'. See, I always get there in the end.

Wednesday playlist...
Wednesday proved to be quite a MAD day!
I was working non-stop all day, and I had not even put my playlist together yet, or rather recorded the discs for it. It was so go-go-go all afternoon, that I didn't get on the air until 7 pm (not 6 pm as I had planned).
SO infuriating!
I explain this a bit on the show, which will be posted eventually.
But for now you will have to settle for the playlist, since this was something I promised to post.
... She said, as if anyone was listening to actually hear that promise!

The 4ad Edition

Some may think it a great injustice that I chose one of my weekend hour shows to dedicate to Britain-based 4ad records.
They would be somewhat correct on this point, but at least I have recognized that fact. The show could have easily have been far longer. And I also have to admit that I was not as informative as I SHOULD have been as far as the label's history.
The reason being...
It was a very last-minute idea.
I put the whole playlist together in just hours.
It is also very difficult to choose only less than an hour's worth of 4ad alumni.
Who knows, maybe it was somewhat of a stretch, but I figured this, if anything, could serve as a preview to a more extended show.
We shall see...
*note: Obviously, the last song is not a 4ad artist, but I was just happy to have got a request!

The Nocturnal Edition

My first time in the K-dub studio at night.
Thus, the 'dark' theme.
It was not all as eerie as it seems.
Just a bit strange.
As always,
Robert Smith understands...
Sunk deep in the night
I sink in the night
Standing alone underneath the sky
I feel the chill of ice
On my face
I watch the hours go by
The hours go by
You sleep
Sleep in a safe bed
Curled and protected
Protected from sight
Under a safe roof
Deep in your house
Unaware of the changes at night
At night
I hear the darkness breathe
I sense the quiet despair
Listen to the silence
At night
Someone has to be there

'4:13 Dream' Listening Party
ALL Cure show!

Finally, after MANY months of waiting, The Cure's 4:13 Dream has arrived!
As usual, I'm never disappointed.
Of course I didn't expect to be, especially after hearing some of the new songs played live at the Sasquatch Festival.
Saturday the 1st of November, the week that '4:13 Dream' was released, I decided a listening party was in order.
So when the opportunity arose to sub for someone at K-dub for an hour, I took it!
My sister and niece joined me this time.
It IS a listening party afterall.
All the things we never know we need...
Looks like we get them in the end.

Another Weekend Adventure...
Tomorrow at 4 pm on K-dub, I will be subbing yet again.
I have been doing this quite a bit lately.
I guess I just can't get enough of it!
And in a way, I am secretly hoping more of you will have an opportunity to live in LIVE. (I guess it's not so secret anymore)
Since the weekends shows that I have done (after tomorrow I will have done 3 thus far) are only an hour long and a bit off the beaten path, I will try to post them right away.
It should not take too long; an hour show is not as strenuous to record.
This is something I feel I really need to do, since I understand not many are listening to my shows live, even on the weekend! And yes, I know our lives ARE quite busy.
Since those of you are missing out on the immediacy of it all, I hope to rectify this by posting the weekend editions by next week.
If you do happen to listen in live tomorrow at 4 pm (btw - thanks Maija, I know you have been) always expect an educational theme (er... music-wise, I'm not gonna get THAT deep, people).
So amid our trying and hectic schedules...
Don't forget to stop and smell the vinyl.
As always, Stay Tuned! ... it's good for the soul, really!

Show # 1 'Left Of The Dial'

K-dub studio (2007).
I have been an avid listener of College radio now since my early teens.
I am a bit older now, well... perhaps a lot older now and I have to say my feelings about college radio have not waned.
College radio is very important!
If it had not been for a particular local college radio station, I am not sure I would listen to as many bands as I do now.
A lot of the music I listen to today, I heard for the first time on KWCW.
Nowadays, kids have the internet to broaden their musical horizons and introduce them to the next most important band in their life.
Back in the 1990's, however, I did not have that luxury.
I, as many of you 25+ ones may concur, had to discover great music the old-fashioned way, turning my radio dial oh so far to the left... until I hit 90.5 FM.
I was a total K-Dub fanatic for a long while, sticking scotch tape on the top of hundreds of old used cassette tapes so as to record until they ran out.
I still have them all somewhere lying around. It's a riot to give them a listen today. A few in particular force me to remember my Gothy/Punk days with some admitted fondness.
Not so long after, my friend Amy suggested we apply for a Summer show at K-Dub.
Finally, I would be the DJ! A dream fulfilled!
'The Easy Cure' lasted around 10 weeks back in the Summer of 1999.
Some years later, well... a lot of years later, I decided it was time to resume my DJ role and 'I Hung Around In Your Soundtrack' was born.
And so... here I pay homage to the great College Radio!

Show # 9 'The Vinyl Solution'
All vinyl show!
I love vinyl.
And there's really not much more I can say than that...
well... maybe a little more.
I have spoke briefly of this love affair earlier.
This you will know from my second show post.
There is something very special about records.
You place that intricately grooved slice of vinyl on the turntable... subtle shivers begin instantly!
Heaven knows if this is the millioneth time that needle has hit that first groove.
I believe that is part of the true art of it all.
Oh go on and call it nostalgia if you like, that is quite all right with me.
I have always had a bit of a weakness for nostalgia, anyway.

::Flashback:: Show # 1 REVISITED 'Step Into My Mainstream -Redux'

And so, amazingly, it has actually happened!
Since I currently have the means, this past afternoon, I decided a redux was finally in order. Especially, since it will not be too long until I am posting my Fall shows.

A bit of editing and a request from my sister to my beautiful cousin Maija.
